8th March is Women’s day and I thought I could write something about being a women.
Let me begin by saying that I don’t approve of having ONE day for women.. everyday should be women’s day, everyday women should be treated with love and respect and each women should feel gifted that she is born into this world…but well that doesn’t seem like the case, does it? If it was, we didn’t need to make such a big fuss over March 8th ..
The general idea behind having this concept of a “day”… any “day”.. is to remember and celebrate the significance of THAT day.. birthday is to remember the day you were born; anniversary is to remember the day you got married and so on and so forth…. So what is Women’s day? What are we trying to remember.. that we are women? That we are emotional and sensitive and that is how we like it?
I like the idea of celebrating the events of our lives but then you should have “human being” day… so everyone can celebrate… why is it only Women’s day? This whole “fairer” sex thing is being blown out of proportion. Don’t get me wrong, I DO think being a woman is great and I do think it is worth celebrating but I do not like the idea of being singled out. We keep saying we want to be treated as equals but we are also happy when we celebrate “women’s day”; when we are assigned a quota in the parliament; when we get special treatment JUST BECAUSE of our gender… and that is where I draw the line.
In the corporate world, I want to be appreciated and rewarded for my contributions and for what I bring to the table.. just like my male colleagues and for that I need to work as hard and smart as them. I did it and have seen great results. I believe it is in my hands to decide how I want to be treated and I chose NOT TO BE TREATED ANY DIFFERENT….
I listened to this video on TED, it is from Sheryl Sandberg, COO of facebook, (http://www.ted.com/talks/sheryl_sandberg_why_we_have_too_few_women_leaders.html) she talks about the small number of women leaders in the corporate world and she says the blame is on the women and not the men for that statistics to be proven right.
We pick other priorities; we take a backseat when we don’t need to; we don’t stand up for our rights; we work hard and don’t talk enough about it; we truly believe that we don’t have what it takes to be A STRONG LEADER;…….and the reality is that until we keep thinking this, the statistics will always be proven right.. the day we believe in ourselves and think that WE HAVE ARRIVED, THAT is the day to change the world.. AND FOR ME THAT DAY IS TODAY.. THAT DAY IS EVERYDAY… when is that day for you??????
